Department Chair's Foreword

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, UTP!

Mechanical Engineering is one of the most diverse, versatile, oldest, and broadest engineering disciplines. Graduates in this field are highly sought after by potential employers in areas of applications such as in Energy Systems, Advanced Manufacturing, Advanced Materials Engineering, and Asset Integrity and Reliability. They are involved in the development and high-end application of mechanical systems applied in a wide range of industries including automotive, aerospace, electromechanical systems, energy, robotics and automation, and manufacturing.

The Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours is a full-time, on-campus program that combines engineering physics and mathematics principles with materials science to design, analyse, manufacture and maintain mechanical systems. The programme's educational objective is to produce engineers who are competent, with the potential to become leaders of Mechanical Engineering industries and who are committed to the sustainable development of Mechanical Engineering industries for the betterment of society. It has a strong emphasis on laboratory-based activities and adopts a project-based approach throughout the curriculum, as well as leverage on its strong network with the industry with real-world mechanical engineering jobs through its signature internship program. It provides a strong foundation in Mathematics, Sciences and Engineering.

At present the Mechanical Engineering Department is ranked in the Top 200 in the QS World University Ranking by subject. We have fifty-one highly qualified and dedicated faculty members to prepare our students to meet the required talents, skills, and knowledge for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0). The department provides opportunities for the pursuit of knowledge and expertise for the advancement of engineering, science, and technology to enhance the nation's competitiveness. Our objective is to produce well-rounded graduates who are creative and innovative with the potential to become leaders of industry and the nation as well as to nurture creativity and innovativeness and expand the frontiers of technology and education for the betterment of society. The department maintains fifteen modern laboratories for both undergraduate lessons and postgraduate research work.
