Introduction

Electronic engineering is a very broad field that encompasses many subfields that includes those that deal with electronic devices and circuit design, control systems, electronics and telecommunications, and embedded systems. Electronics systems comprise of vast amounts of hardware and software and are becoming ever more complex to design, construct, manage and utilise. Such systems require careful specification, and precision design and construction and consequently the demand for engineers trained in the subject is high.

At Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, the MSc in Electronic Systems Engineering Programme is tailored to train young graduates and professionals with advanced integrated circuit design and applications and entrepreneurship skills to enable them to perform R&D and commercialization activities and move up the value chain from the manufacturing era to the design era of the electronic industry.

Besides providing in-depth knowledge of specific subject areas, this programme is also intended to expose the graduates and engineers with a range of analytical and research skills that would be of long-term value. This is achieved through 8 technical modules, 2 management electives, a research methodology course and an R&D project. There is a high degree of computer usage for project, teaching and on-line support. The resource materials are professionally prepared in modular form. Extensive use of e-learning methods is an important attribute of the course delivery.

What is ODL & How it is Conducted in UTP

ODL stands for Open and Distance Learning, a way of studying remotely that offers flexibility for learning from anywhere, anytime, and anyhow with self-directed learning strategies.

In UTP, ODL is conducted as below:

  • 100% online with self-instructional materials (SIMS)
  • 8 hours minimum of online live class session for each course in one semester
  • Classes after working hours/over the weekend
  • Online open-book final exam

Programme Highlights

  1. Three elective courses were designed and updated based on current needs of IC design companies in Penang, i.e. Low power VLSI course, Advanced Digital Systems Design course, and System Verification course covering the following topics
    • low power design
    • memory design
    • verification & test
  2.  The programme heavily uses System Verilog & Python
  3.  Exposes students to the digital and analog integrated circuits design

Mode of Deliverance: Modular, Fully online for ODL and physical lecture for conventional, Min 1 year, Max 3 years


Entry Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field from a recognised university with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 - 2.74 or its equivalent OR;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field from a recognised university with a CGPA of 2.00 - 2.49 or its equivalent will require 5 years of working experience and internal rigorous assessment

English Requirements
  • A minimum TOEFL score of 500 or equivalent
  • A minimum IELTS score of 5.0 or equivalent
  • Native English speakers or holding a degree with English as the medium of instruction may be exempted from this requirement

Pre-requisite courses

Bachelor’s Degree from non-engineering relevant will have to take pre-requisite courses as below:

  • Microelectronic Physics & Devices
  • Communication Systems

It will be conducted 100% online

  • Full Time ODL: RM 23,700 (Malaysian), RM 30,800 (International)
