November 24, 2025 - 51students from the Integrated Engineering programme joined the AI for Good training, conducted by Assoc Prof. Dr. Nurhayati Mellon, one of the academic member of the Integrated Engineering Department, who is also a certified trainer on AI for Good (Edu) from AI Singapore. The training is aimed at helping students to build basic awareness and understanding of AI.
Dr Nurhayati explained what AI is and how it has developed over the years—from the introduction of Artificial Intelligence to Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and today’s Generative AI. Students also learned how generative AI works, where it is used, its impact on daily life, and how it will shape the future.
A key focus of the session was ethical and responsible use of AI. Students were introduced to the idea of “Do No Harm” when using AI and were guided through the important skills expected of students when using AI as outlined in the DEC AI Literacy Framework. These skills help students understand how to use AI safely, responsibly, ethically, and with care.
Dr Nurhayati also reminded students that humans must always stay at the centre of decision making. While AI can help us do tasks faster or better, humans are still responsible and accountable for all final decisions made with AI support.
By the end of the session, students gained more confidence in understanding AI, its benefits, and its risks. They also learned why responsible use of AI is important and how they can be better prepared for an AI-driven future. Students also received a certificate of completion upon successfully completing the assessment at the end of the training session.
