Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Geoscience

(R3/0532/6/0001) (01/2033) (A9560)

Introduction

Geoscience plays a vital role in understanding Earth processes, managing natural resources and supporting the energy transition and sustainability. It underpins key industries such as energy, mining, construction, and environmental management. The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Geoscience at UTP prepares graduates with strong foundations in geology and geophysics, combined with modern, data-driven applications. The programme equips students for diverse careers in the evolving energy and resource sectors.

In the early years, students undertaking this programme will study core subjects including geology, geophysics, earth processes, geochemistry, and engineering mathematics, before progressing to areas such as energy geoscience, strategic minerals, geospatial and remote sensing, and earth resources management. Hands-on learning is emphasised through fieldwork, industrial training, and industry-based projects. In the final year, students complete a capstone team project and a research-based Final Year Project, with options to specialise in selected areas of interest, which are:

  • Petroleum Geoscience
  • Basin Studies

The programme embeds a Minor in Data Science within its curriculum, exposing students to applied statistics, artificial intelligence, business intelligence, data science and machine learning for modern geoscience analysis.
