UTP Talent Search 2009 (23 Sep 2009)
On the 23rd October 2009, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has organised Talent Search 2009 at the Chancellor Hall of UTP. This event which was themed “Funky Back to School”, was organised by the International Culture Club in collaboration with Co-Curriculum Unit, Student Support Services Department of UTP.
The main objective of this event is to provide a platform for UTP students to showcase their hidden talents. This is parallel with UTP’s mission which is to create well-rounded students. Besides having fun, RM500 from the ticket sold and RM500 from the participation fee of UTP Open Tennis Tournament 2009 was donated to National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM).
The competition which started with audition sessions from 10 -11 October was divided into two categories which are Singing Category and Open Talent Category. Open Talent Category was introduced for students to showcase their other talent besides singing. All participants were judged by a panel of judges including Miss Juwita Suwito, a well-known singer, Miss Suenddy Kee Pei Chin, a music teacher, Miss Shosann, a choreographer and a part time singer, Mr. Joe Ong, a musician and Miss Raja Yasmin, a PR consultant.
Among the finalists for Singing Category were:
1. Nurul Hidayah Binti Mohamed Ghozali (Chemical Engineering, 2nd year 1st semester)
2. Muhammad Hafiz Bin Abdul Aziz (Chemical Engineering, 2nd year 1st semester)
3. Arina Binti Sauki (Msc in Petroleum Engineering, 1st year 1st semester)
4. Ku Eet Ying (Information Communication Technology, 1st year 1st semester)
5. Steven Ngui (Civil Engineering, 2nd year 1st semester)

Finalist for Open Talent Category were:
1. Yap Wi Son(magic) (Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2nd year 1st semester)
2. Star D(modern dance)
3. Interbeats(break dance)
4. Chin Ze Shen(saxophonist) (Petroleum Engineering, 1st year 1st semester)
5. Silapaatigavam(Indian dance)
Winner of both categories were based on accumulated marks from panel of judges and votes from audience. Votes from audience contributed 40% and 60% to Singing and Open Talent categories respectively. Steven Ngui emerged as the Champion for Singing Category while StarD was the Champion for Open Talent Category. Both received a Challenge Cup sponsored by UTP Rector, Datuk Dr. Zainal Abidin Bin Haji Kasim.
A special tribute was paid to the late Michael Jackson, where all finalist of Singing Category sang a medley by the ‘King of Pop’. Later, there were performances by the guest artistes, The Times and Juwita Suwito.
The event was sponsored by Faber Medi-Serve(main sponsor), followed by Mytec Computer Sales and Services as the co-sponsor, Brightone Production as the recording album sponsor and VICO as the official drink sponsor.
