UTP - The first private university to emerge as the Champion of this 20-year old debate championship (15-19 Jul 2010)
UTP Debate Team emerged as the Champion in Intervarsity Environmental Debate which was held on 15th-19th July 2010 at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). This is the first time in 20 years that a private university managed to clinch the title from public universities .
The 20th Intervarsity Environmental Debate was jointly organised by the Department of Environment (DOE), Majlis Debat Universiti-universiti Malaysia (MADUM), Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) and UMT, which the latter was the host of this event. A total of 24 higher learning institutions participated in this debate.
UTP Debate Team was represented by Junnyaruin anak Barat (4th year, Petroleum Engineering), Muhammad Imran Muiz bin Abidin (1st year, Petroleum Geoscience), Muhammad Siddiq bin Mahyildin (2nd year, Petroleum Geoscience) and Mohammad Khazaidi bin Kamaruddin (2nd year, Petroleum Geoscience).The competition required all participating teams to go through six preliminary rounds, quarter final, semi-final and the final. UTP won 5 out of 6 matches in preliminary round and ranked second. After defeating MMU and UPM in knock-out stages, the final witnessed UTP team won over Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) in which the notion was “Law enforcement is more effective than raising awareness in protecting the environment”.
Besides, emerging as the Champion, two of UTP debaters had also received overall best speaker award where Junnyaruin anak Barat was ranked 2nd and Muhamad Siddiq bin Mahyildin was ranked 4th. The Champion walked away with RM8,000.00.
