UTP Emerged as the National Champion of ChemE Car Competition 2010 (22 July 2010)

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) won the 1st Place in the ChemE Car performance category in the 5th Malaysian ChemE Car Competition. ThIs annual event which was held on 22 July 2010 at SEGi University College was organised by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) since 2006.

The main objective of ChemE Car Competition was to determine the best team that could construct a car fueled and stopped by chemical reactions given certain water load (0 to 500 mL) and distance (15 to 25 m), which were only disclosed on the competition day. The students had to apply their knowledge in reaction kinetics, mechanical systems, circuitry and other technical skills to design and test the car. This competition is a good platform for students to demonstrate creativity and innovativeness in applying engineering knowledge outside the classroom.

Twenty-four teams from twelve local and international universities participated in this year’s competition. The participating universities were:

1. National University of Singapore (NUS)
2. TATi University College
3. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)
4. Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL MICET)
5. Universiti Malaya (UM)
6. Universiti Malaysia PAHANG (UMP)
7. Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS)
8. Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)
9. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)
10. Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM)
11. University Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP)
12. Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)

The UTP winning team, i-Green, constructed a ChemE Car powered by two Zinc-Carbon dry cells. The car stopping mechanism was based on Aluminum-strip in acid solution, which was innovatively designed to cut the power circuit at a specified time. Another UTP team namely SPRINTA managed to secure the 7th Place in the car performance competition.
