UTP Clinched Triple Championships Through, “1 Malaysia Culture Dance Competition”,”Debat Perpaduan Antara Institusi Pengajian Tinggi (IPT) Tahun 2011” and “SIFE National Exposition (Students in Free Enterprise)”

UTP has emerged as the Champion in the 1 Malaysia Cultural Dance Competition organised by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Kuala Lumpur. The UTP Performing Arts Group (UPAG), which consists of 21 UTP students, was one of the 6 professional and amateur teams in Malaysia which took part in the event. As the champion, UTP was given the honour to represent Malaysia in the 9th Cheonan World Festival which will be held from 27 September – 5 October 2011 in Korea. UTP will be competing with 29 teams from other countries around the globe in this prestigious annual cultural art festival.

UTP Debate Team has emerged as the Champion beating Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in this intervarsity debate championship which was held from 22nd to 26th July 2011. This debate competition was participated by 34 institutions of higher learning including public and private universities. It was officiated by Y.B. Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon, Minister, Prime Minister’s Department. This is the first time that the competition is hosted by a private university which was jointly organised by Jabatan Perpaduan Negara dan
Integrasi Nasional, Perak State Government Administration, the Ministry of Higher Education, Majlis Debat Universiti-universiti Malaysia (MADUM), and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS.
UTP Debate Team was represented by Junnyaruin anak Barat (4th year, Petroleum Engineering), Muhammad Imran Muiz bin Abidin (2nd year, Petroleum Geoscience), Muhd Shafiq Samsuddin (2nd year, Electrical and Electronics Engineering) and Rahmat Bee binti Abdul Aleem (2nd year, Business Information System).
The competition required all participating teams to go through six preliminary rounds, quarter final, semi-final and the final. UTP won 5 out of 6 matches in the preliminary round. After defeating Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) in the quarter and semi respectively, they moved on to the final against UiTM. The motion of the Finals was “Demokrasi Kini Semakin Mantap”. The Champion walked away with RM7,000.00.

UTP was chosen as the champion for the first time in the SIFE National Exposition 2011. This is also the first time that a private university won this national competition. Prior to this, only UITM and UMS have ever represented Malaysia in the World Cup.
In the Exposition, all SIFE Teams were evaluated based on how successful they were at using business concepts to improve the quality of life and standard of living for those in need through sustainable entrepreneurial-based activities. 80% of the final round distinguished judges who include the Chairman, CEOS, VPs, and Directors of big corporations/organisations such as CELCOM, Coca-Cola, SME Corp, Khazanah, Maybank, Sunway, Chartis, KPMG, Cerdik Publications and CIMB just to name a few, voted for SIFE UTP to represent Malaysia.
The projects undertaken and presented by SIFE UTP include:
- helping 5 single mothers from Persatuan Ibu Tunggal Nurkaseh to set up ‘Kedai Jahit KITA SEMUA’ -a tailoring/sewing business at Section 18, Ipoh, Perak;
- guiding 20 schools in Perak to help the poor and the needy to be financially independent through entrepreneurial-based projects;
- guiding 20 schools in Perak to convert ‘Waste To Wealth’ which have commercial values;
- improving a cup cake business of a Baitumal recipient until being nominated as Usahawan Asnaf Perak 2011;
- conducting business motivational seminars for the handicapped from Persatuan Pemulihan Orang Cacat Negeri Perak, and other handicapped persons in Perak.
UTP team was represented by Nur Ain Mansur (3rd year, Chemical Engineering), Haziq Abdul Hanis (2nd year, Petroleum Geosience), Aqilah Abu Bakar (2nd year, Civil Engineering) and Ahmad Syazwi Ahmad Shukri (2nd year, Petroleum Geoscience). In the final round, they beat the teams from from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). In the semi-final, they beat the teams from Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM).
For SIFE, the team will be representing Malaysia to the World Cup that will be held from 3 – 5 October in Kuala Lumpur where 39 other teams from other countries will be competing. This event will be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak where SIFE is expected to attract 2500 participants including 500 corporate leaders worldwide such as Micheal Polk, President of Unilever and Doug McMillon, CEO of Wal-Mart.
