Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Appointed as Institutional AMIL of Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Melayu Perak (MAIPK), 10 August 2011

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has been officially appointed as an Institutional Amil of the Perak Council on Islam and Malay Custom or Majlis Agama Islam Dan Adat Melayu Perak (MAIPk) through the signing of an agreement between the two parties which was held at the Senate Hall of UTP on 10 August 2011. UTP is the third higher educational institution in Perak which is appointed as an Institutional Amil, after Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) and Universiti Teknologi MARA Kampus Seri Iskandar (UiTM).

This appointment will assist UTP Muslim staff to make their annual zakat contribution in a more convenient way, namely through the monthly salary deduction scheme. Additionally, 50% of the annual zakat payment made by UTP Muslim staff through this scheme will be returned to the university to be distributed amongst the eligible asnaf namely Amil (UTP), Fi Sabilillah (in the cause of Allah), Miskin (the poor) and Gharimin (the indebted). Poor students of UTP will be given the priority. A specific committee, namely Jawatankuasa Tabung Amanah Zakat UTP (UTP Zakat Trust Fund Committee) has been established to operationalise the distribution of the collection. The appointment of UTP as an Institutional Amil helps to realise the “syariah” aspiration towards zakat as a mechanism of social responsibility outlined in Islam.

During the signing ceremony, UTP was represented by Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim, Vice Chancellor of UTP while MAIPk by YBhg Dato’ Dr. Syed Omar Sharifuddin Bin Syed Ikhsan, The Chief Executive of MAIPk. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Tuan Haji Mohd. Noor Rosli Baharom, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs & Alumni of UTP and Ustaz Munawwir Mohd Noh, Zakat Executive of MAIPk. Also present at the ceremony were the delegation from MAIPk, members of Management Committee and Senate of UTP.
