​Discover PETRONAS 2012 (28 – 29 November 2012)

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) recently collaborated with PETRONAS to organise the Discover PETRONAS from 28 to 29 November 2012 at Chancellor Hall’s Foyer UTP.   The two-day event was officiated by UTP Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hj. Hashim.

With the theme “Explore-Engage-Inspire”, this inaugural event was organized with the following objectives:

To realize PETRONAS’ aspiration in becoming “a regional education and learning hub for the oil and gas industry” To create a platform for students and academics to connect with experts and professionals from the industry via exchanging of ideas and discussions on current issues faced by the oil and gas industry. To prepare and equip students, in particular the final year, with the necessary skills towards graduation, and later on, recruitment into the industry.

In his officiating speech, YBhg Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim remarked that this event is yet another milestone for UTP as it continues its journey to become a Research University and a university of choice globally.

YBhg. Datuk also informed that in the oil industry, human capital or talent is becoming more difficult to find as over 50% of the current industry workforce is expected to retire within the next 5 years. To strategically align with this issue, UTP will work together with PETRONAS on how to fill the gap between the generations of professionals now exiting in the industry and “Generation Y”.

Among the activities organised in conjunction with the event were inspirational talks and exhibition from PETRONAS integrated business groups such as Sponsorship & Talent Sourcing Unit, Exploration & Production, Downstream, Gas & Power, Technology & Engineering Division, Health, Group Health & Safety Environment and Education & Learning.   These activities gave students a real-world prospect of what was expected of them when they join the workforce and an insight on how things are beyond the text book.

Also present at this event was Pn. Norhaliza Ibrahim, Head, Talent Sourcing & Employee Relations, Human Resource Management Division of PETRONAS.
