​UTP Makes Huge Leap in The QS World University Rankings 2023​

​​Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has been ranked in the top 26% in the world according to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2023. The university continues to rise significantly in the rankings, jumping 53 spots to 361st from its previous position of 414th.

UTP’s performance in the rankings is driven by citations, faculty/student ratio and international faculty, which is reflective of the university’s strong reputation globally in terms of academic excellence, research outputs and high impact publications. 

According to UTP Vice Chancellor Professor Ts. Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, the university is delighted of this achievement as it is no easy feat to maintain its position in the renowned QS World University Rankings while improving in its global percentile position. 

“This is a testimony to UTP’s dedication as a world-class institution committed to excellence in teaching and learning, research and student experience. This has been made possible due to the unwavering support from PETRONAS and our collaborators, relentless efforts of the university's leadership and management team, the outstanding works of our distinguished faculty members and the hard work of our students,” he said. 

“We are pleased to see that our strategic partnerships with universities in the region as well as the high-quality graduates that we produced are recognised by diverse industries, which has strengthened the university’s global reputation.

“We will continue to lead for excellence in academic, research and students’ experience to generate global ready and responsible citizens. As for research and innovation, we will support PETRONAS’ energy transition initiatives to move towards Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) as one of our key areas in our quest towards sustainable global prominence,” he added.

UTP is consistently being ranked and progressing steadily in the world and nation rankings and ratings namely QS, Times Higher Education (THE), Malaysia Research Assessment Rating System (MyRA) and Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education (SETARA). 

In the QS Asia World University Rankings, UTP is ranked 72nd while in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022, UTP is ranked 159th for Engineering and Technology subject areas. UTP's other notable successes include being ranked 119th at THE Young University Rankings 2022, ranked 95th in THE Asia University Rankings 2022 and ranked 60th for THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2022.

As for the local rankings and ratings, UTP has retained its six-star rating (the highest performance level) in MyRA for its research development and commercialisation programme. In addition, the university has achieved a six-star or outstanding status in SETARA for its teaching, research and services.

With UTP’s consistent achievements in both national and international rankings and ratings, it has reaffirmed its position as the number one private university in the nation.
