People's Republic of China Appoints Prof Shahir as National Foreign High Talent Expert In Offshore Engineering

In the field of offshore engineering, UTP Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Commercialisation, Prof Ir Dr Mohd Shahir Liew stands as an eminent figure, acclaimed not only for his profound expertise but also for his exceptional journey transcending international boundaries.

His appointment as the National Foreign High Talent Expert by the People's Republic of China serves as a testament to his continuous commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering global academic collaborations.


Prof Shahir path as the National Foreign High Talent Expert has been paved with decades of experience and groundbreaking contributions to the field of offshore engineering. His extensive knowledge has not only expanded the horizons of research but has also catalysed transformative innovations in this domain.


His responsibilities encompass a wide spectrum of academic engagement and collaborative endeavours. He assumes the role of an academic luminary, imparting his knowledge through specialised lectures that delve deep into the intricacies of offshore engineering.


Beyond lectures, Prof Shahir takes an active role in shaping academic programmes, enriching the curriculum, and initiating collaborative ventures.

However, Prof Shahir's tenure as the National Foreign High Talent Expert is not confined to academia alone.  He firmly believes in establishing a foundation for long-term collaboration, strengthening ties between UTP, China University of Petroleum-Beijing, China University of Petroleum – Qingdao, Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, Xi'an Shiyou University and Yangtze University.

Looking ahead, Prof Shahir envisions a future where extensive student and staff exchanges become the norm between the institutions.

"These programmes promote cross-cultural understanding and collaborative research, thereby enriching the academic experiences of all involved,” he said.

Reflecting on his appointment, Prof Shahir said, “I am immensely pleased and honoured with this appointment by the People's Republic of China. 

“I hope that this collaboration will play a pivotal role in facilitating knowledge exchange, promoting research cooperation, and fostering the development of international partnerships. These partnerships extend beyond the bounds of China and Malaysia to encompass other esteemed Chinese institutions such as Wuhan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tsing Hua University,” he added.​
