On 12th Dec 2020, Dr. Rashid and the team visited Rumah Titian Ashraful Rohaniah located in Teluk Intan, Perak. The mission was to carry out Phase 2 activity for USR Environment Pillar project at the Rumah Titian. In Phase 2, the plan is to install Vermicomposter 1.0, a composting unit that plants vegetable. This is a continuity project from Rumah Titian Donation Drive that was organized back in June 2020 under the USR Environment pillar.
The unit fabrication is supported by Dana Hijau program led by the Institute of Self-sustainable Building. Via Vermicomposter 1.0, Dr. Rashid introduces green technology to Rumah Titian, so they can grow vegetable in their own backyard, as one of the solutions to support their residence daily meals. Vermicomposter 1.0 stands for "Vermi" aka Verms, while the "composter" consists of a composting tube in the middle of the tank where it processes organic wastes (food scraps and kitchen waste) into organic fertilizers. The unit not only helps to grow vegetables, but it encourages the residence to have more outdoor activities. This promotes healthier lifestyle while sustainable living. In addition, trains and educate them in gardening.
Subsequently, an upcoming Vermicomposter 2.0 will be conducted with support from Dana Hijau and the USR KTP funds. This time, more industry partners will be roped in. Through green technology, it will not only help community such as Rumah Titian to have food security via sustainable approaches, but also to generate side income by selling the vegetables to support their household expenses.
