Supporting STEM in Schools via Donations of Laboratory Apparatus and Consumables
UTP Laboratory Management Department (LMG) through its Centralised Chemical and Material Management (CCMM) has contributed to nearby schools such as SMK St Bernadette Convent Batu Gajah via donations of laboratory items and materials for teaching and learning in STEM subjects. With sustainability in mind, most of the apparatus were sourced from various research projects that has been completed and were still in good condition. This donation will benefit 716 students enrolled in the science subject and 119 chemistry subject students.
Collaboration to Establish a Sustainable Coastal Environment in Teluk Nipah, Pangkor Island
UTP in collaboration with Manjung Municipal Council (MPM) and Manjung District Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS Manjung) to establish a sustainable coastal environment in Teluk Nipah. Initiated by UTP's Institute of Self-sustainable Building (ISB) in 2019 and led by Ts Dr Teh Hee Min, the stakeholders plan to implement best practices for maintaining a healthy marine ecosystem. The project also involves educating the local community about sustainable practices, encouraging responsible tourism, and enhancing economic opportunities for the community. The project will help to ensure that the area remains a vibrant and thriving ecosystem for generations to come.
UTP Students Lead Green Initiative Programme for Primary Students for Sustainable Future
Students of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) organised a university social responsibility programme for primary students focusing on green activities. It involved 176 students and 16 teachers from Sekolah Kebangsaan Ayer Denak Tronoh & SRJK (C) Kampung Nalla Tronoh Held in collaboration with the Global Environment Centre (GEC) Malaysia, Tzu Chi Bercham Recycling Centre, and UTP's Epic Team, the event was aimed at raising awareness about the role students can play in creating a sustainable future. This also aligns with the university's aspiration to reach sustainable global prominence and PETRONAS energy transition initiatives to move towards Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE).
Sharing of Solar Technology with Local Community
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS contributed a new mobile solar electricity generator (MSEG) to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Iskandar, in replacing the old unit donated in 2011. Developed by researchers led by Associate Professor Dr Balbir Singh Mahinder Singh, the MSEG is designed in a way where users can get first -hand experience on utilising the electricity generated by harnessing solar energy. It is also a means to educate students and the community about sustainable living. The MSEG is one of many initiatives undertaken by the university towards its local community in promoting the use of renewable energy and subsequently reduce carbon emissions.
Run for Greener Future
Themed 'Loving Nature', the programme was held to promote healthy lifestyle and raise awareness on the importance of conserving the nature for a greener future. UTP students, staffs, the local community and runners all over Malaysia participated in the event to test their limits in the 21km and 8km distance. This competition to promote environmental awareness through practical conservation efforts such as planting trees, recycling, reduce carbon emissions by walking and bicycling.
Sharing of Expertise, Technology and Resources for a Sustainable Conservation of The Environment
UTP, through its Institute of Self-Sustainable Building for Smart Living (ISB), and Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia (DID) are working together in areas that include but not limited to coastal hydraulics and offshore engineering, internship programme, joint research and development activities, staff development programmes, joint publications of research outcomes, journal access and sharing of laboratory facilities and expertise.
Marine Coastal and Delta Sustainability for Southeast Asia (MARE)
The project aims to develop adaptive, end-user-oriented and internationally-relevant curricula to support sustainable management and governance of coastal and adjacent marine areas of partner countries: Malaysia and Vietnam, and to create sustainable feedback mechanisms to end-users, ensuring practical relevance of teaching contents and knowledge co-production opportunities. The project will focus on the following priority issues:
- Coastal science and management
- Delta science and management
- Area-based management
- Fisheries, seabed resources & food security
- Offshore exploration & mining
