Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) is Malaysia’s number one university according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings 2021. Ranked at 134th, UTP also scores the highest in the country for the research indicator. With this achievement, it has further cemented UTP’s position as Malaysia’s top private university and among the best universities in the world.
At 24 years old and in an increasingly competitive field of young universities, UTP has consistently being ranked and continued its progress at a steady pace in the THE global rankings of universities under 50 years of establishment.
“We are young, so these rankings are particularly important because they reflect our achievements against our peers and we are performing very well,” said UTP Vice Chancellor, Professor Ts. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib.

UTP has maintained its position as the best private Malaysian university, proven through consistently being ranked in the world and the nation rankings and ratings such as Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), Malaysia Research Assessment Rating System (MyRA) and Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education (SETARA).
Notably, UTP is ranked 70th in the QS Asia University Rankings 2021. The university has also recorded a steady growth in the THE Asia University Rankings 2021, rising to 111th from 124th last year. It is also ranked 230th in the QS World University Rankings Engineering & Technology Broad Subject 2021, where both its Petroleum Engineering and Mineral & Mining Engineering subjects are ranked in the Top 50 and the first in the nation.
In the recent QS World University Rankings 2022, the university has significantly improved its position, soaring 25 spots, from 439th to 414th. It has been gradually progressing in the rankings for the fifth consecutive years and consistently climbing the rankings. Since its debut in 2017, it moved up from 601-650 to 521-530 in 2019. Then it broke into the top 500 and was ranked 482nd for the following year. For the 2021’s rankings, the university leapt 43 places to be ranked 439th. It has now risen 187 places in the rankings since 2017.
Furthermore, UTP is the only private university in Malaysia with a six-star rating (the highest performance level) in MyRA for its research, development and commercialisation. In addition, the university has achieved a six-star or outstanding status in SETARA for its teaching and learning.
