Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has been awarded software licenses valued at $3.4 million (RM15.6 million) from Baker Hughes. The JewelSuite Subsurface Modeling package, a cutting-edge software, is poised to revolutionise education and research in the field of petroleum geoscience.
The JewelSuite Subsurface Modelling package specialises in constructing the industry's most accurate 3D subsurface models. Its functionalities are comprehensive, ranging from detailing intricate fault systems to addressing unconformities and salt intrusions.
The software's advanced scenario planning capabilities eliminate uncertainty, providing a reliable evaluation of complex geology. This, in turn, establishes a robust foundation for reservoir architecture and provides class-leading subsurface insights. The immeasurable value of this donation underscores its vital role in the oil and gas industry.
According to UTP Chair of Geoscience, Dr Khairul Arifin Mohd Noh, "UTP is honoured to receive software from Baker Hughes. The donation of this software will significantly enhance the learning experience of our petroleum geoscience graduates’ students. Through hands-on exposure, students gain invaluable practical insights, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. This better equips them to navigate challenges in the oil and gas industry, making their educational journey more enriching and industry relevant.
"By working closely with industrial partners like Baker Hughes, we can provide a robust and competitive environment to prepare our students for impactful contributions to the oil and gas industry. This collaboration exemplifies a shared commitment to fostering excellence in petroleum geoscience education and research," he added.
The software will serve as an incentive for advancing research initiatives at UTP. Within research clusters such as Integrated Reservoir Modelling, the Jewel Suite Subsurface Modelling package enables experimentation and exploration. Its contribution to Reservoir Characterisation will enhance UTP's position at the forefront of technological advancement in subsurface modelling.
Meanwhile, Baker Hughes Malaysia Country Director Nazirah Mohd Bashir said, “We are proud to support UTP with the student education and development plan, this is a testament to uphold Baker Hughes ‘care’ value towards the community.”
Furthermore, Baker Hughes Digital Regional Manager APAC Khaidir Rahmatsyah.said, “We are excited to provide software that will support UTP research and educational programmes. It is important that we collaborate with universities like UTP to help train top talents and gain the necessary practical experience by using JewelSuite software.”
