Professor Dr Reiko Kuroda graduated from Ochanomizu University with BSc, and the University of Tokyo Graduate School with MSc & PhD in Chemistry.
After her PhD, she worked at King's College London and the Institute of Cancer Research in the UK before returning to Japan in 1986. In 1992, she became the first woman to be made full professor of natural sciences at the University of Tokyo. She moved to Research Institute for Science and Technology, Tokyo University of Science in 2012, and then to the Institute for Science and Technology Research (now called Frontier Research Institute), Chubu University in 2019.
Professor Dr Reiko Kuroda's field of research is primarily chirality (left and right asymmetry) in both chemistry and biology. She is a scientist known for her seminal contributions to this field and was made a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Professor Dr Reiko Kuroda established the Science Interpreter Training Programme at the University of Tokyo and was appointed to serve as a governor for the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre in 2006. She has also served as Vice President for External Relations in the International Science Council and served as the Scientific Advisory Board member of the United Nations Secretary General on Global Sustainability. She is a full member of The Club of Rome, Fellow of TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries), and a steering committee member of INGSA (International Network for Government Science Advice)-Asia.
