MPU4 (Community Engagement Project)
What is MPU4?
HDB1012 Community Engagement Project (CEP) is a compulsory course offered to all UTP students as part of MPU (Mata Pelajaran Umum / General Studies) National requirement prescribed by the Ministry of Education Malaysia. This course is a project-based activity, categorized under MPU4, to complement MPU1, MPU2 and MPU3 courses that are based on knowledge, skills, morals, value, patriotism and towering personality. The course is designed to ensure that students will acquire some of those basic elements to be applied in CEP as to support students' development. The social and value emphasis on this community based project is in line with UTP mission to produce well-rounded graduates with a broad-minded, balanced and holistic views. In this course, students are required to form a group of five (5) to plan and execute any CEP with the approval of UTP MPU4 Committees.

Objective of MPU4
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- plan a community engagement project.
- implement community engagement project with a targeted community.
SUCCESS HIGHLIGHTS
SCREEN DREAM: Cultivating 21st-Century Communicators
On 13 – 14 December 2023, Screen Dream was held at Pusat Kegiatan Guru – Centre of Excellence (COE) Tasek with the aim of cultivating media and advocacy experts through real-world practice. The programme also focused on building adaptable learners prepared for 21st-century challenges while empowering confident communicators for TV PSS content creation.

A total of 144 teachers and students from primary and secondary schools in Kinta Utara benefitted from this initiative. They engaged in practical activities designed to enhance their skills in media production, advocacy communication and digital storytelling, equipping them with the confidence and knowledge to excel in the evolving education and media landscape.

The programme successfully achieved its mission of fostering creativity, critical thinking and effective communication among participants, preparing them to become skilled and adaptable media advocates for the future.

EMPOWERING KAMPUNG SUAK PADI: Driving Digitalisation and Sustainable Livelihoods
From 26th to 28th September 2024, Empowering Kampung Suak Padi was held in Kampung Suak Padi, Bota, Perak, with the objective of enhancing digitalisation in marketing platforms and financial transactions in line with the national aspiration for digital transformation. The programme also aimed to provide exposure to at least 20 female villagers and skilled villagers on entrepreneurial platforms to support financial needs while introducing low-cost, simple and sustainable income opportunities through fruit tree planting.

The initiative benefitted female groups, skilled villagers, teachers, students of SK Suak Padi, as well as the Orang Asli Semai from Kampung Orang Asli Suak Padi and Orang Asli communities from nearby villages such as Kampung Tumboh Hangat and Kampung Gedong Batu.

Throughout the programme, local vendors learned how to use digital marketing tools and QR payment systems, students acquired financial literacy skills, villagers were introduced to composting as a method of sustainable waste management and fruit tree planting provided the community with a source of informal yet continuous income.
The project successfully integrated technology, education and sustainability to empower the local community and promote innovative solutions for rural development.

MASS PROJECT: Empowering Salt Farmers and Students through IoT Technology
From 28th April to 3rd May 2024, the MASS Project was carried out in Kabupaten Pamekasan and SMA Negeri 1 KAMAL of Pulau Madura, East Java, Indonesia. The project aimed to equip salt farmers with the skills and knowledge needed to install and maintain IoT systems in salt production while exposing high school students to the significance of IoT in Indonesia's salt industry.

Through this initiative, salt farmers were enabled to monitor soil moisture, salinity, and weather conditions in real-time, optimising their production process. Training sessions were conducted to help farmers operate the IoT monitoring system, while high school students gained valuable insights into STEM applications and the economic importance of local industries.

The project also promoted idea and knowledge exchange between universities, strengthening collaboration in addressing real-world community problems while enhancing students' learning experiences with science and technology relevant to their local economy.
