The Geosciences Department at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS was established just about a decade ago in 2006. This year also saw the introduction of MSc Petroleum Geosciences programme by coursework.
The first intake of undergraduate students followed three years later in 2009 with 22 students. The popularity of the course, augmented by a pool of dedicated and experienced lecturers, with many having vast industrial experiences, see that the current population of undergraduates rises to a high of 400.
The Geosciences Department, which is equipped with state-of-the-art research equipment, trains young geoscientists to be technically qualified, well-rounded, with the potential to become leaders of the industry and the nation.
The department has three centres, namely the South-East Asia Carbonate Research Laboratory (SEACARL), the Centre for Seismic Imaging (CSI) and the Basin Research Group (BSRG). These three centres cater to the research needs of the industry.
The department, will no doubt, continue to strive for academic excellence and will continue to stimulate the intellectual development of the student and prepare them for future challenges.
