The province of Aceh was severely devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on 26 December 2004. The province was rocked by a magnitude of 9.1 SR at 8.15 am in the morning and has killed 2,876 teachers, about 700 professors, 211 university employees, 105 medical doctors, 711 nurses, about 4,000 government employees, more than 1,400 university students, over 54,000 pupils and more than 200,000 peoples in Aceh alone including their limited numbers of librarians.
Besides to assist Aceh Government in rebuilding their human capacity (focusing on Library) by providing the training to their librarians, the main objective of the programme is also to enhance international relations between the two countries in view of interdependency on skills, competencies, knowledge and experiences among the librarians.
The two-week programme was specially designed by IRC in order to accommodate their needs and requirement through comprehensive briefing, workshop, on-hand job training (minor), sharing session, Special Event – Forum on Aceh Librarians Moving Forward Plan, site visits and also visitation to Perak’s Heritage centre i.e Taiping, Kuala Kangsar, Pulau Pangkor Night Market, etc. during the weekends and public holiday.
