Double Champion for UTP in 'Smart Competition' and 'Student Paper Competition' of Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Intellectual Parade (OGIP) 2011 (7-10 Mar 2011)
Society of Petroleum Engineers, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Student Chapter (SPE-UTP-SC) emerged as champions in both Smart Competition and Student Paper Competition of Asia Pacific Oil and Gas Intellectual Parade (OGIP) 2011 held from 7 to 10 March 2011 at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran (UPN Veteran) Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
SPE-UTP-SC is represented by Kang Hooi Yee, Nurul Iffah M. Garib and Adonis Singh from Geoscience and Petroleum Engineering Department (GPED) in the Smart Competition and won a cash prize of 5 Million Rupiahs, a trophy, as well as certificates. Smart Competition is a competition based on single elimination in which three teams compete with one another with the winning team from each match advancing the next round. There are three rounds in this competition, namely the preliminary round, semi-final and final. This competition, which focused on the oil and gas factual and technical knowledge, gathered participation from ten premier oil and gas related universities from Asia Pacific region, as students endured intense battle in competing to answer theoretical and analytical questions asked in each round. SPE-UTP-SC emerged top by defeating Institut Teknologi Bandung and UPN Veteran Yogyakarta in the final round of the competition.
On the other hand, Aiman Jamaludin, a final year Petroleum Engineering student as well as a former board member of SPE-UTP-SC, emerged as the overall winner of the Student Paper Contest with his research work entitled 'Alkaline Flooding of Low Acid Number Crude Oil'. His paper is selected as the best from a pool of six finalists consisting of undergraduate students from various top learning institutions in Asia Pacific. The criteria that were set by the judges on the paper contest were based on the originality of the project, the content of the research work, the oral presentation of the paper, as well as the posters which contain the outline of the research work. He won a cash prize of 5 Million Rupiahs, the winner’s trophy, as well as certificates for his hard work and effort.
OGIP 2011 is an event with a series of activities which allowed petroleum-related students to parade their intellectual and academic achievements. This event saw the active participation from more than ten universities from Asia Pacific region and also prominent oil and gas industry personnel.
Parallel activities in OGIP 2011 include oil and gas exhibition, career fair, panel discussion, guest lecture, oil gas and geothermal field study and talk show.
