UTP donates 200 bicycles to underprivileged children (4 October 2015)
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) today donated 200 bicycles to underprivileged school children from 20 schools in Tronoh and surrounding areas during Convo Ride 2015, the university’s CSR programme as well as cycling event, held in conjunction with UTP’s upcoming 15th convocation ceremony this month.
Since Convo Ride was first organised in 2012, more than 400 bicycles have been donated to school children. For this year’s CSR programme, UTP received sponsorships and donations of more than RM100,000 and a portion of the donations will be channeled to Yayasan UTP bursary fund to provide financial aid for UTP students. The bicycles were sponsored mainly by UTP and PETRONAS staff as well as other individuals and organisations at RM 300 each.
As a cycling event, Convo Ride 2015 covered a distance of 45km involving areas of Seri Iskandar, Bota, Tanjung Belanja, Manong and Parit. This year’s Convo Ride attracted more than 600 cyclists from all over Malaysia such as Penang, Kedah, Selangor, Kedah and including cyclists from as far as Terengganu and Kelantan.
The main sponsor for the Convo Ride 2015 is PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad. Other sponsors include Perniagaan Azrak Sdn Bhd, Ciclista Sdn Bhd, Global Plus Solution Sdn Bhd and Twitter Seri Iskandar.
Besides Convo Ride, other CSR programmes initiated by UTP to continuously engage with its surrounding community are ‘Menggapai Impian’ (a project to assist underprivileged children by sponsoring their basic school necessities), ‘Majlis Berbuka Puasa UTP’ (giving donations to and breaking of fast with the less fortunate people) and a community development project in Kg Aji, Bota Perak to assist the villagers in their socioeconomic well-being and education.
