UTP Researcher is Honoured with International Association of Advanced Materials Medal

The International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM) Sweden recently honoured Professor Dr Bahruddin Saad of UTP Fundamental & Applied Sciences Department (FASD) for his outstanding R&D contributions during the 25th IAAM Award Assembly Congress at M/S Mariella Stockholm Sweden on 25 March.
The Congress was attended by about 350 participants from 50 countries.
The IAAM Medal is awarded by the International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM), a prime organisation in the field of Advanced Materials to individuals and associations for their notable and outstanding contribution towards the advancements of materials for global excellence. The organisation has over 50,000 members from 139 countries.
He received the award for his research on the introduction of simple method using advanced materials that can be used for the determination of important compounds such as food contaminants, drugs and environmental pollutants. For example, the method can be used by the Ministry of Health to survey contaminants in food that the public consume daily. Due to its simplicity and low-cost, the method allows a much larger pool of samples to be analysed.
"I am honoured to be receiving this award. It was indeed a proud moment as I reflect the many years that I have devoted to research. This is by no means a manifestation of my efforts only but rather the perseverance of my postgraduate students, relentless family support and encouragement from UTP. Thus, I accept this award on behalf of my department (FASD), research institute (Institute of Self-Sustainable Building), UTP, PETRONAS and Malaysia.
"As an educator, one can hope that you are making an impact on future generations of scientists. This is a heart-warming recognition and I hope that it will inspire the younger generation to take up STEM education," said Bahruddin.
He also hopes that more UTP staff will attend top conferences in their research areas. It is through these conferences that one can gain insights on the frontiers of knowledge and meet eminent scientists in the field.
Prof Bahruddin obtained his BS, MS and PhD degrees from Indiana University Bloomington (1980), North Texas State University (1982) and University of Wales (1988), respectively.
He joined UTP since July 2017 following his retirement from Universiti Sains Malaysia. He is a fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry, the Editorial Board Member of Food Chemistry, the Editorial Board Member of Malaysian Journal of Analytical Sciences and the Editorial Board Member of Malaysian Journal of Chemistry.
His current research area is focused on new analytical methods for the determination of endocrine disruptors in the environment.
