UTP and Altair Collaborate to Launch First-of-Its Kind Applied Scientific Computing Centre of Excellence

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and Altair Engineering Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Nasdaq-listed Altair Inc, have announced the setting up a new Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Applied Scientific Computing, a first-of-its-kind in Malaysia.
The new CoE aims to deepen the university's research capabilities in computing science and engineering and enhance the University's standing in Malaysia and internationally.
The CoE will focus on research areas related to multi-physics, multi-scale modelling as well as internet of things (IoT) over the next few years.
Speaking at the official launch event, UTP Vice Chancellor Professor Ts. Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib said, “UTP enjoys a strong reputation for quality education and research innovation. We recognise the far-reaching impact of research in helping our students prepare for the challenges brought about by Industry 4.0, while at the same time bringing about more sustainable solutions to improve the nation's technological competitiveness."
“UTP is delighted to partner with Altair, which is a leader in simulation and engineering solutions, to achieve new research outcomes that bring positive and long-lasting impact for Malaysian businesses and communities," he added.
As Industry 4.0 transformation picks up momentum, UTP firmly believes universities are responsible to provide not only standard domain knowledge to their students, but also practical industrial experience to help them take on new roles brought about by digitisation.
In addition, with this collaboration, UTP will become the Centre for Learning for technologies developed by Altair for universities and commercial establishments in Malaysia. UTP students will have the opportunity to learn the latest skills required to spur further innovation for the oil and gas sector, which in turn, will lead to the creation of industry-ready graduates. UTP graduates are highly sought-after by industry with 90% marketability.
Commenting on the collaboration, Altair's Managing Director for Malaysia and ASEAN, Srirangam Srirangarajan said, “Altair is honoured to be selected as the key technology partner for the CoE. Altair, as the key technology partner for the new CoE, will also provide a High-Performance Computing (HPC) server which will serve as the backbone for the new CoE. Students will be able to enjoy access to Altair solutions, from simulation design to data intelligence, to drive research innovation.
PETRONAS Chairman and UTP Pro Chancellor Datuk Ahmad Nizam Salleh witnessed the official launch of the CoE.
