UTP's Agents of Change Empowers Students in Language and Technology
1 November to 24 November 2023
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) students recently carried out the Agents of Change (AOC) project with the aim to enhance language skills and literacy technology for 30 students in Year 4, 5, and 6 at SJK (T) Tronoh.
Led by Soviinthiran Kuruparam, a Petroleum Engineering student, the CSR project involved 23 students from the UTP Sangeeth Club, representing various programmes at UTP.
The AOC project, held in collaboration with UTP Centre for Student Development (CSD) had three primary objectives: firstly, to improve students' communication skills in English and Bahasa Malaysia; secondly, to increase awareness of STEM subjects; and finally, to enhance computer skills.
The classes, conducted over four weeks in four sessions, utilised specially designed modules to effectively impart language skills to the students. Various activities, such as role-playing, simulations, storytelling, reporting, and public speaking, were integrated into the sessions.
Furthermore, the AOC project equipped students with necessary technological skills, including proficiency in using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, preparing them for future school projects and facilitating their transition to secondary school. The computers were obtained through donations from individual contributors, IOI Foundation, UTP CSD and UTP Sangeeth Club.
The AOC project is poised to collaborate further with SJK (T) Tronoh for more activities, with the aim of increasing students' awareness of STEM and fostering the hope that they will pursue science, technology, and engineering programmes at UTP for their tertiary education.
Moreover, it aspires to expand its impact by seeking collaboration with other schools across the state to ensure that more students benefit from this initiative. The AOC project stands as a testament to the power of community engagement, education, and technology in shaping a brighter and more sustainable future for students and communities alike.
