UTP Honoured 1,386 Graduates at 23rd Convocatio​n

A total of 1,386 Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) graduates received their scrolls at the university’s 23rd convocation ceremony from 29 to 30 October at UTP Chancellor Hall in Seri Iskandar Perak. 

UTP Chancellor, Tan Sri (Dr) Mohd Hassan Marican conferred the degrees for the two-day convocation. 

Of the 1,386 graduates, 192 were conferred with postgraduate’s degree while the remaining 1074 received the bachelor’s degree. 

Established in 1997, UTP has produced over 23,000 graduates, with more than 90% secure employment within six months of graduation. The university has also nurtured numerous successful technopreneurs and business leaders. 

This year’s convocation also saw a first-time graduation for three programmes, Bachelor in Business Management (Honours), Bachelor of Materials Engineering with Honours and Doctor of Philosophy in Information Systems. 

Electrical and Electronics graduate Jocelyn Teh Shuang Ru was awarded the Chancellor Gold Award, while Chemical Engineering graduate Amanda Yap Yi Tong and Information Technology graduate Fatin Fakhira Fahrurazi received the Chancellor Silver Award and Chancellor Bronze Award respectively. 

Amni Haslinda Alpandi, a Petroleum Engineering graduate received the Postgraduate Best Research Award for the Doctor of Philosophy’s category. Meanwhile, Arina Kho Chiaw Sen, a Drilling Engineering graduate, received the Best Student Award for Master Programme by Coursework. 

UTP Pro Chancellors Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik and Tan Sri Zaharah Ibrahim as well as PETRONAS Chairman Tan Sri Dato Seri Mohd Bakke Salleh, UTP Chairman Board of Directors Datuk Bacho Pilong, UTP Board Members and UTP Vice Chancellor Professor Ts Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib also attended the convocation.

According to Mohamed Ibrahim, “UTP's vision from the very beginning is to be the leader in technology education and serve as a hub for creativity and innovation. 

“The university aspires to become the country's foremost provider of engineering education and continually enhance its performance in global rankings and ratings. Our goal is to emerge as one of the region's premier engineering schools,” he said. 

As an institution, UTP also bears a collective responsibility to contribute to the sustainability of the entire UTP community through education and research. 

“We believe that we can address environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues by applying ESG principles across our relevant areas of operation, engaging in research and education, and connecting with stakeholders and communities. 

“This aligns with our ambition to attain sustainable global prominence and support PETRONAS's collective energy transition efforts towards achieving Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE). These efforts are guided by four key pillars: Continuous Value Creation, Environmental Protection, Positive Social Impact, and Responsible Governance,” Mohamed Ibrahim added.
