Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has maintained its strong position in the prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2023, placing the institution among the best universities in the world. The university emerged as the world’s most improved institution, among those with 10 or more ranked subjects, with an overall improvement of 82%.
The results showcased UTP’s strengths in three broad subject areas, engineering and technology, natural sciences, and arts and humanities. In terms of subject rankings, the university has made significant improvements and risen in eight subjects.
Five out of seven of the university’s Engineering & Technology subjects have shown commendable improvements in the latest edition of the rankings.
Petroleum Engineering is ranked 16th improving six places from its previous rankings of 22nd while Mineral and Mining Engineering is ranked at the 49th position in the world. With these rankings, UTP has maintained its standing as the number one university in the nation for four consecutive years for both subjects.
The rankings also placed Chemical Engineering at the 99th position in the world, breaking into the Top 100 for the first time.
The results for both Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering have also improved notably by moving up one band, with the former placing at 151-200 from its previous ranking of 201-250 and the latter rising from 251-300 to 201-250.
Meanwhile, Civil Engineering as well as Computer Science and Information System have retained their position in the rankings, placing at the Top 200 and Top 450 respectively.
For Engineering and Technology Broad subject areas, UTP is now ranked 200th globally, and is the fourth highest ranked university in the nation. It has also consolidated its position as the number one private university in ASEAN for Engineering and Technology broad subject areas.
The non-Engineering and Technology subjects have also recorded significant improvements in the rankings. Materials Science is now ranked in the Top 350 (up one band from 351-400), Chemistry at Top 400 (up two bands from 451-500) and Business and Management Studies at Top 500 (up one band from 501-550).
UTP Vice Chancellor, Professor Ts. Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib expressed his delight and pride at the university's achievement globally.

Whilst in research and innovation, we will support PETRONAS’ energy transition initiatives to move towards Net Zero Carbon Emission (NZCE) as one of our key areas in our quest towards sustainable global prominence,” Mohamed Ibrahim added.
