UTP Student Jocelyn Teh Shuang Ru Emerges as Champion in Intel AI Design Competition
17 June 2023
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) proudly celebrates the exceptional achievement of Jocelyn Teh Shuang Ru, an Electrical and Electronics Engineering student, who has secured first-place positions in the prestigious 2023 Intel Building Digital Readiness Program.
Organised by Intel Malaysia in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia and CREST, the 2023 Intel Building Digital Readiness Program offers youth the opportunity to acquire AI skills and responsibly apply them to design innovative solutions that foster long-term competitiveness.
Jocelyn’s remarkable success extends across two categories, highlighting her exceptional talent and innovative mindset. In the AI Enthusiast above 18 category, she emerged victorious for the second time, demonstrating her consistent excellence. The AI Enthusiast category focuses on students who possess innovative ideas to create AI-enabled solutions with a significant social impact using Intel technologies.
For her submission, Jocelyn presented a concept that involved developing a machine learning model capable of intuitively controlling prosthetic movement through electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Leveraging Intel OpenVINO and Intel Next Unit of Computing (NUC), her project enhances user experience and functionality for individuals using prosthetics.
Furthermore, Jocelyn achieved success in the AI Impact above 18 category. This category recognises individual students or groups who have developed innovative AI-based solutions that generate positive social impact using Intel technologies.
Jocelyn’s project involved creating a mobile application with a deep learning model running in the backend, capable of translating American Sign Language (ASL) signs into phrases. This innovative solution empowers hearing individuals to comprehend the meaning of ASL signs without the need to learn sign language. Jocelyn optimised the deep learning model using Intel OpenVINO and performed inference using the Intel Neural Compute Stick 2 (NCS2).
This award-winning project also served as her Final Year Project. For this, she expressed her gratitude to Ir Dr Patrick Sebastian from UTP Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering for his invaluable guidance and support throughout the completion of her project.
With these achievements, Jocelyn has earned her the esteemed honour of representing Malaysia in the upcoming Intel AI Global Impact Festival 2023, scheduled this September. This international platform recognises and celebrates outstanding achievements in the field of AI, providing Jocelyn with a unique opportunity to showcase her talents on a global stage.
Jocelyn's outstanding accomplishments exemplify the calibre of students that UTP nurtures, empowering them to drive positive change in society and contribute to technological advancements and their practical applications.
