Seri Iskandar, 7 December 2023 - Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and the Seri Iskandar Fire and Rescue Department recently won prestigious awards in recognition of their outstanding collaboration on the 'Smart Home Guard' innovation.
The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department Innovation Week 2023 acknowledged the 'Smart Home Guard' in the hybrid/collaborative innovation category, highlighting the project's innovative nature and its potential to revolutionise home safety.
At the Ministry of Local Government Development Innovation Award 2023 ceremony, UTP and the Seri Iskandar Fire and Rescue Department were honoured for their strategic collaboration. This recognition highlights the effective synergy between the two parties in developing and implementing innovative solutions.
Developed in collaboration with Gensonic Technology, the 'Smart Home Guard' is an innovative grill that incorporates advanced sensors and real-time communication systems, creating home safety solution by utilising a microcontroller known as miniGen. It is equipped with a wireless sensor system featuring smart capabilities. If a hazardous fume is detected by the smoke detector, the alarm is triggered.
Simultaneously, utilising the miniGen setting, the lock mechanism on the grill automatically opens within a 5-second timeframe. This rapid release of the lock is crucial in expediting life-saving efforts by the Fire and Rescue Department to extinguish fire incidents and facilitate the evacuation of occupants.
According to UTP Vice Chancellor Prof Dato' Ts Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, “We are appreciative of this recognition bestowed upon UTP and the Seri Iskandar Fire and Rescue Department for the 'Smart Home Guard' innovation.
“This recognition reinforces the commitment of both UTP and the Seri Iskandar Fire and Rescue Department to advancing technology for societal benefit. It also reflects our dedication to fostering impactful collaborations that transcend traditional boundaries and bring about meaningful change,” he added.
The success of the innovation stands as a testament to the robust collaboration between both parties, seamlessly integrating UTP’s expertise with the practical insights of the Seri Iskandar Fire and Rescue Department. This project aims to leverage smart technology, thereby enhancing both home safety and emergency response capabilities.
The 'Smart Home Guard' serves as a model for future collaborations between academic institutions and local authorities, showcasing the positive outcomes that can arise from synergistic efforts.
