Centre for Biofuel and Biochemical Research
Overview & Aspiration
A variety of fuels can be produced from biomass resources including liquid fuels, such as, ethanol, methanol,
biodiesel and gasoline, and gaseous fuels, such as hydrogen and methane. Biofuels are primarily used on fuel
vehicles, but can also fuel engines or in fuel cells for electricity generation. Through thermo chemical
conversion research, the Centre is developing technologies to convert biomass such as trees, grass and other
materials to fuels and materials. These biofuels will reduce the nation's dependence on fossil fuel, improve
air quality and support rural economies.
Objectives
- Set up alliances with other biomass researchers and centres.
- Establish collaborative research programmes with Industry.
- Organise specialised seminars and short courses in the area of biomass utilisation.
- Actively participate in international conferences, and publish papers and books.
- Contribute towards creating a scientific journal dedicated to Green Technology in Asia.
