UTP Won 2nd Prize For The EAGE Laurie Dake Challenge 2020

OZIL Energy, a representative team from UTP, was presented the 2nd Prize out of six teams involved in the final round of the EAGE Laurie Dake Challenge 2020. The final round which concluded on last 27 July 2020, was conducted via online platform due to the pandemic outbreak situation.

The commencement of the challenge took place while they were in their final year first semester, where the team submitted their application and first assignment in December 2019. In the first round of the results announcement, only13 out of 48 participating teams across the globe was selected as the semi-finalist. For the second-round submission, OZIL Energy was selected as the top 6 teams, progressing them to be in the final round.

Alongside UTP, the other finalists are University of Stavanger, Norway; Mexican Institute of Petroleum, Mexico; IFP School, France; Curtin University, Australia; and Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia. The final standing are:


1st Prize : Mexican Institute of Petroleum, Mexico
2nd Prize : Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia (*1st in Asia Pacific region)
3rd Prize : Bandung Institute of Technology, Indonesia
4th – 6th : University of Stavanger, Norway; IFP School, France; Curtin University, Australia (standing not specified)

OZIL Energy consists of five recently graduating undergraduate students which are led by Sathes Kumar (Geosciences), Syafiq Md Noor (Geosciences), Roodra Manogaran (Geosciences), Kon Jow Jiunn (Geosciences) and Chong Wei Jian (Petroleum Engineering); and was guided by the Geosciences Department, Petroleum Engineering Department as well as the Centre of Seismic Imaging (CSI) and South East Asia Carbonate Research Lab (SEACaRL).

 

The Laurie Dake Challenge is a long-running project for EAGE students. The project is a fully integrated evaluation and development task that challenges students to simulate a real industry activity where the dataset was provided by the industry. For this year’s challenge, the dataset was provided by SHELL.


Depending on the pandemic situation, the culminating in a final round is tentatively to be held during the official Opening Ceremony on Monday, 8 December 2020 at EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition in Amsterdam, where the EAGE President will be announcing the official Laurie Dake Challenge 2020 winning team.
