UTP Honoured 1,438 Graduates at 22nd Convocation

A total of 1,438 Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) graduates received their scrolls at the university’s 22nd convocation ceremony from 6 to 7 November at UTP Chancellor Hall in Seri Iskandar Perak.

This year, UTP's convocation celebrations were made even more momentous as it coincided with the university's 25th anniversary.

UTP Chancellor, Tan Sri (Dr) Mohd Hassan Marican conferred the degrees in all three sessions for the two-day convocation.

Of the 1,438 graduates, 91 were awarded Doctor of Philosophy, 252 were conferred with master’s degree while the remaining 1095 received the bachelor’s degree.

As for international students, a total of 173 graduates from 22 countries were conferred degrees.

Since its establishment in 1997, UTP has produced more than 22,000 graduates from over 50 countries. Over 90% of its graduates are employed by various industries within six months after graduation. The university has also created many successful technopreneurs and business leaders.

This year’s convocation also saw a first-time graduation for Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) programme and seven master’s programmes conducted via open distance learning.

Information Technology graduate Daniel Yusoff Mustaffa was awarded the Chancellor Gold Award, while Electrical and Electronics Engineering graduate Wong Lin Yong and Information Systems graduate Nurziaty Nordin received the Chancellor Silver Award and Chancellor Bronze Award respectively.

Meanwhile, Petroleum Engineering graduate, Farnaz Namaziyan, received the Best International Undergraduate Student Award.

Mohamad Fakhrul Ridhwan Samsudin, a Chemical Engineering graduate, received the Postgraduate Best Research Award for the Doctor of Philosophy’s category. Meanwhile, Low Han Lun, a Drilling Engineering graduate, received the Best Student Award for Master Programme by Coursework.

UTP Pro Chancellor Tan Sri Zaharah Ibrahim, UTP Chairman Board of Directors Datuk Bacho Pilong and UTP Vice Chancellor Professor Ts Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib also attended the convocation.

Malaysia’s top private university and second among all institutions of higher learning according to the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia and World Rankings, UTP is leading the way in technology education, and has set its sights on continued excellence in the coming years.

According to Mohamed Ibrahim, “UTP’s vision from the very beginning has been to be a leader in technology education and a centre for creativity and innovation.

“Our academic programmes are consistently recognised as some of the most reputable globally. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) in the 2022 World University Rankings by Subjects, ranked UTP’s petroleum engineering and mineral and mining engineering subjects in the Top

50 and Top 60 respectively – making it the top university in the country for both these subjects for the third consecutive year.

“In marking its 25th anniversary, the university is aiming to become the country’s best provider of engineering education by 2025, and to continuously improve its performance in global rankings and ratings. The goal is to become one of the region’s elite engineering schools,” he added.
