Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Hosts Successful Research Attachment Program for Xi'an Shiyou University Students

Institute Hydrocarbon Recovery (IHR) recently concluded a successful 12-week research attachment programme for six students from Xi'an Shiyou University. The programme aimed to provide the students with valuable research experience in the field of geosciences while fostering cultural exchange and collaboration between the two institutions.

Throughout the programme, the students participated in a variety of activities designed to enhance their theoretical knowledge and practical skills. This included attending short courses on Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), a crucial technology for mitigating climate change.

To complement the classroom learning, the programme included a series of field trips that exposed the students to real-world geological formations. These field trips encompassed a geological survey at Ipoh, a visit to the Geology Museum, and a trip to the PETRONAS Geoscience Centre, granting them insights into Malaysia's geological landscape and the petroleum industry.

Furthermore, the programme offered a unique opportunity for the students to attend the 2024 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Kuala Lumpur. This premier industry event allowed them to network with leading professionals and gain exposure to the latest advancements in offshore technologies.

The programme also included a comprehensive 4-day, 3-night geological field trip in Langkawi, offering an enriching opportunity for students to translate their classroom learning into practical skills. During this hands-on journey, participants engaged in active data collection and analysis, delving into the geological complexities of the region and gaining invaluable field experience. This not only reinforced their theoretical understanding but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the dynamic nature of geology when observed in its natural environment.

Beyond academics, the programme offered cultural exploration opportunities. Students participated in cave exploration, experienced the thrill of water rafting, and learned the art of batik crafting, gaining a deeper appreciation for Malaysian nature and heritage​.

The programme culminated with the students presenting their research findings, allowing them to showcase the knowledge and skills acquired during their time at UTP.

This research attachment programme proved to be a valuable learning experience for the students from Xi'an Shiyou University. The programme served as a catalyst, amplifying their academic prowess while simultaneously arming them with practical skills, a toolkit for their impending professional journey. It laid a robust groundwork in research methodologies, acting as a springboard for their intellectual curiosity. Moreover, the programme nurtured a sense of global citizenship, promoting an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures, thereby broadening their horizons.​
