Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and the Embassy of Malaysia in the Philippines recently co-hosted a pivotal Industry Roundtable on Halal Technology and Energy Security & Transition in Manila, the Philippines.
The event explored the intersection of technology, halal industries, and sustainable energy solutions, fostering collaboration among academic, governmental, and industry leaders from Malaysia and the Philippines.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to the Philippines His Excellency Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino was the roundtable's guest of honour and delivered the welcoming remarks.
The roundtable brought together key stakeholders, including industry leaders, policymakers, and academics, with a focus on advancing halal industry standards and ensuring energy security for both countries and the broader ASEAN region.
UTP Vice Chancellor Professor Dato’ Ir Ts Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib expressed his gratitude to the Embassy of Malaysia in the Philippines for co-organising the event and facilitating cross-sector collaboration.
"The transition to secure energy solutions and the growing demand for halal-certified products require innovative, technology-driven approaches, which demand collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and interdisciplinary solutions to ensure sustainable outcomes," he said.
As the Philippines expands its halal industry, UTP’s expertise in halal technology can support the government's vision for a robust halal ecosystem.
One of the key collaborations between UTP and the Philippines is the Halal Transparent Traceability System (HATTS), a groundbreaking initiative developed by UTP to improve traceability within the halal supply chain using blockchain technology and IoT. This system, particularly relevant to the Philippines’ chocolate supply chain, has the potential to improve transparency and compliance.
“UTP is committed to driving positive change in Malaysia, the Philippines, and ASEAN through our expertise in digital transformation, engineering, and sustainable energy,” Mohamed Ibrahim said.
The roundtable underscored UTP’s commitment to regional collaboration, driving progress and shared solutions for halal technology and energy security, with a vision of a Quadruple Helix collaboration that integrates universities, industries, government, and society for sustainable, real-world solutions.
