Conquer Your Challenges
For many, going to university is a life-altering change. Moving away from home for the first time or learning how to build a new support network can be stressful. The pressure of living up to expectations, let alone, the pressure of delivering something that one has never done before, for example, leading a student event, can exact a toll on one’s self-belief.
Meanwhile, for others, getting on the end of harsh criticism for one’s research project or dealing with a difficult colleague can be exasperating to say the least. During this transitional and sometimes vulnerable stage, sadly, many suffer mental breakdowns.
As a result, many often feel overwhelmed when anxiety and depression sneak up on them—crippling their positive outlook. The picture isn’t pretty, and it can be costly. Oftentimes, chaotic and uncontrollable events can adversely affect students and staff’s motivation, influencing their learning and emotional state.
All these conditions can compound everyday stress to the point that day-to-day living becomes unbearable. Despite all these circumstances, although you may not be able to change them right away, you can most certainly do better at handling them. Make no mistake, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and it isn’t something you can just snap out of. It’s important that we recognize the red flags and pay attention to our mental health.
Thankfully, in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS we have our counsellors and psychologists who are always one call away to help students, staff as well as parents feel less overwhelmed, less exhausted, and more in control about what lies ahead.
